Surgical Approaches for Internal Fixation (SAIF◊)

Cadaver Course designed for PGY 4/5 Residents

Registration will open on Tuesday,  January 15th through Thursday,  January 24th.

Registration process

Applications for each course can be accessed and submitted at www.orthomeetings.com

Residents interested in attending a SAIFTM course will be required to submit an application. Applications will be reviewed and residents will be notified if their applications are accepted or declined.
Applications will be accepted first from PGY 5 then PGY 4 residents. Applications from PGY 3 residents in the second half of their third year will be considered.

No more than two residents per institution will be accepted per course unless the course is not filled to capacity.

Applications with incomplete or inaccurate information will not be accepted.

Smith & Nephew sales associates will be notified in advance of the dates and times applications can be submitted for each course.

Residents must have permision for time off to attend the course prior to registering. It is costly for us to issue non-refundable airline tickets and then have residents cancel because they can’t get time off to attend the course.

Course Attendance

Residents accepted to participate in a SAIF course are expected to attend all educational sessions. It is the discretion of Smith & Nephew to notify the program directors of those residents who cancel at the last minute or who do not show up for all educational sessions.

Financial Support

Reasonable airfare,  hotel accommodations based on double occupancy,  transportation from local airport and hotel will be provided by Smith & Nephew. Breakfasts and lunches will be provided during the course.
All other meals will be the responsibility of the course participant.

Military residents or government employees must have permission from commanding officer to attend the course and to accept Smith & Nephew’s in-kind offer to provide reasonable airfare,  hotel and modest meals expenses.

In compliance with the Massachusetts Marketing Code of Conduct and the Vermont Law effective July 1,  2009,  residents attending a SAIF course from these states will be responsible for their own travel,  lodging and course prorated food and beverage costs and/or provide disclosure information required by the state in which they are licensed.

New Sunshine Law

Under the new federal “Sunshine” law,  all medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers,  including Smith & Nephew,  will be required to track and report payments and transfers of value to US-licensed physicians and teaching hospitals. Based on the most recent update released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in May 2012,  it further delayed the data collection requirement to begin no earlier than January 1,  2013. CMS intends to release the final rule later this year. Smith & Nephew is committed to full compliance with the new law. In order to comply,  we will need to report on the following items we purchased for or paid for on behalf of US-licensed physicians (pending the Final Rule to be released by CMS):

  • Transportation expenses
  • Lodging or accommodations
  • Meals or refreshments
  • Certain educational materials (Smith & Nephew published items are not reportable)
  • Other items that have an independent value

Dress

Dress for the course will be casual. Surgical scrubs and disposables will be provided for use in cadaver labs.

Course description and objectives

The Surgical Approaches for Internal Fixation (SAIF) course is offered by Smith & Nephew and is designed for 4th and 5th year residents. This unique course offers hands-on individualized learning experiences and utilizes cadaver labs to demonstrate anatomy and safety zones during tissue dissections. Course participants will perform surgical exposures in fresh cadavers and will apply hardware to cadaver bones as they would in performing an open reduction and internal fixation of a real fracture. In addition to cadaver dissections,  course teaching methods will include didactic presentations and case reviews by renowned faculty. There will be ample time throughout the course for one-on-one interface with faculty.
